Abortion Bans, Religiosity and Guilt by Association

Lawmakers have passed sweeping abortion bans in Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio this week, furthering the agenda of the “Christian” right and the anti-woman movement in America. In Ohio, an eleven year old girl was raped and got pregnant as a result. Under the new law, she would be forced to bring the pregnancy to term, very likely resulting in serious harm to her physically, emotionally and psychologically, as well as there being slim chances of survival for the baby. But the Bible says this is how it has to be, so thus it is.

Aren’t we fighting wars against religious extremism in deserts and rock piles around the world? Isn’t there a separation of religion and government anymore? The fake Christians that make up the ranks of the #maga movement and the followers of lunatics like Jerry Falwell, not to mention the complicit Republican Party, are on a rampage of faux religiosity, attacking women, the LGBTQ+ community, socialists, liberals, reasonable people, the intelligent, those with educations, the literate; none of us who espouse reason or basic human decency are spared their fire-and-brimstone wrath. But this is nothing new. They’ve been waging war on kindness and mercy since the universe was created six thousand years ago. What is new is that the leadership of the country is now on board with these motherfuckers.

Trump is obviously the tip of this loathsome pyramid, but let’s not forget the Stephen Millers and Mitch McConnells who prop him up every day. They’re just as disgusting as he is. Worse still are the ones who aren’t necessarily bad people, but who have been caught up in the vortex of idiocy and who, for various reasons, can’t get out. Take the much beloved (on the left) George Conway, husband of the lying exoskeleton Kellyanne. He’s a Twitter phenom, a die-hard Trump-baiter, a formidable attorney speaking truth to power. But when does he stop being all those things and start being the stalwart husband (and all that that entails, e.g. support, love, comfort, etc.) of one of the most odious members of an odious administration? He can talk a good game, but the “I was trying to bring it down from the inside” defense only works for so long before your words ring hollow and your actions (staying married to that thing) speak loudest. John Kelly, H.R. McMaster, Kirstjen Nielsen, et al, will (or should) all be judged just as harshly as Trump and his family (don’t get me started) when the history books are written. They knew perfectly well what they were getting into when he won the election; he was a racist, sexist, misogynistic, homophobic degenerate since the day he was born. Anyone who thought otherwise was living under a rock.

When the next eleven year old child is raped and impregnated and is forced to carry the baby to term, all of these people will have blood on their hands. Let’s hope they at least have the courage of their convictions to stand up and say loudly and proudly, “Children who are raped by adult men deserve to have to go through the ordeal of bringing their pregnancies to term. It’s what Jesus wants for them.”
